Mimosa Hostilis/Tenuiflora

Jurema Preta / Tepezcohuite

Nature has gifted us with a vast array of resources, and among them, Mimosa Hostilis stands out as a remarkable plant with versatile properties. Beyond its cultural and medicinal significance, Mimosa Hostilis root bark has long been utilized as a natural dye, bringing vibrant colors to textiles and artistic creations. In this blog, we explore the fascinating world of Mimosa Hostilis as a dye and the captivating hues it imparts.

•Historical Roots of Natural Dyes•

The art of dyeing with natural substances spans thousands of years, deeply rooted in human history and culture. Before the advent of synthetic dyes, plants, minerals, and even certain insects were used to obtain colors for fabrics and decorative purposes. Mimosa Hostilis root bark has been treasured by indigenous communities in South America for its dyeing properties for centuries.

•The Magic of Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark•

The rich, dark brown root bark of the Mimosa Hostilis tree contains pigments that create a stunning range of colors when extracted. The bark's high tannin content plays a crucial role in dye production, as tannins have an affinity for binding to fibers, making the dye more durable and long-lasting.

.•Preparation and Use•
To create natural dye from Mimosa Hostilis root bark, a simple preparation process is used. The bark is carefully dried and finely shredded, then mixed with water or a suitable liquid to create a dye bath. Through gentle soaking, simmering, or even ice bath dyeing, the rich color is slowly released and absorbed by fabrics or materials.
Or also when boiling, and simmering the color from the bark is released and absorbed by the fibers

•Vibrant Hues•

Mimosa Hostilis root bark dye yields an exquisite range of colors, ranging from warm earth tones to deep shades of purples and blues. Depending on the fabric type, mordants (substances that help fix the dye to the fibers) can be used to modify and enhance the color palette. The resulting hues possess a natural and unique quality, adding character and depth to textiles.

•Sustainable and Eco-Friendly•

One of the significant advantages of using Mimosa Hostilis root bark as a dye is its eco-friendliness. Unlike synthetic dyes that often contain harmful chemicals and pollutants, natural dyes are biodegradable and do not contribute to environmental pollution. Additionally, sourcing dye materials from sustainable and ethically harvested Mimosa Hostilis root bark ensures a responsible approach to dye production.

•Exploring Creative Possibilities•

Mimosa Hostilis dye offers an exciting playground for artistic expression. From textiles to paper, yarn, and even natural cosmetics, the dye can be applied to various mediums, allowing artists and craftsmen to create unique and captivating pieces. Its versatility and ability to interplay with different fibers and materials make it a favored choice for those seeking a connection to nature in their creations.

Mimosa Hostilis root bark, with its innate dyeing properties, allows us to tap into nature's palette and bring forth vibrant colors. Its historical significance, eco-friendly nature, and the artistic possibilities it offers make it a remarkable resource for those seeking a connection to traditional dyeing techniques and a sustainable approach to creativity using natural dye alternatives

-MIMOSA HOSTILIS-

Mimosa hostilis rootbark

#MHRB #PURPLE DYE

•ABOUT MIMOSA HOSTILIS•

Mimosa tenuiflora, also known as Jurema, Tepezcohuite, or Mimosa Hostilis, is a perennial tree native to South and Central America. Its root bark, stem, and leaves have long been used to make soaps, creams, lotions, and natural dyes. Traditionally used for treating burns, scars, and as a skin tonic, it contains around 16% tannins, which help stop bleeding by acting as an astringent.

Though not fully researched, Mimosa is believed to be antiseptic, analgesic, and support skin regeneration. It’s used in dermatology to reduce wrinkles, acne, and scars from psoriasis, herpes, and chickenpox. It may also protect and stimulate collagen and elasticity.

It gained fame when used to treat over 5,000 burn victims after a gas explosion in Mexico. Its popularity in natural skincare and organic dyeing is growing, yet it remains rare in Europe—ideal for creating unique soaps or dyed fabrics to gift or sell.

Our Mimosa Hostilis inner root bark is sourced from a sustainable South American farm, free of pesticides and chemicals. Bark is harvested without harming the tree. The inner bark is dried at low temperatures to preserve potency, while leftover material is turned into compost for reforestation projects.

What Can Be Used as Natural Dyes?

Natural dyeing is an age-old method using tannin-rich botanicals like Mimosa, madder root, spirulina, turmeric, and indigofera to color fabric. These ingredients offer lasting, vivid tones and are ideal for sustainable dyeing.

Best Fabrics for Natural Dyeing:

Use natural fibers: cotton, linen, silk, or wool.

Cotton and linen absorb plant-based dyes especially well.

Why Choose Natural Dyes?

Eco-Friendly – Made from renewable plant sources, with no toxic chemicals.

Unique Results – Each dye batch gives distinct, beautiful tones.

Safe for Skin – Gentle and non-toxic for clothing and household items.

Step-by-Step Dyeing Guide:

1. Fabric Prep:
Wash fabric to remove any residues.
Mordant if needed (e.g., with alum or iron) to help the dye bind.

2. Make the Dye Bath:
Boil or steep your chosen plant material in water.
Strain to remove solids.

3. Dyeing the Fabric:
Place fabric in the dye bath and simmer gently.
Let sit for several hours, stirring now and then.

4. Rinse & Dry:
Remove when the color is right.
Rinse with cold water until clear.
Air dry completely.

5. Optional Fixing:
For better color retention, wash with mild soap or vinegar.

Enjoy experimenting with nature’s palette to create beautifully dyed, one-of-a-kind fabrics in a sustainable way

Ice Bath Method

1. Soak your fabric in a natural fixative (e.g. 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) for 1 hour, then wring out and keep damp.

2. Lay the fabric in a tray, loosely scrunched or folded as desired.

3. Sprinkle finely shredded or powdered plant dye evenly over the fabric.

4. Cover the entire fabric with crushed or cubed ice.

5. As the ice melts slowly over 8–24 hours, it carries the dye into the fibers.

6. Once melted, rinse in cold water until clear, then wash and dry separately
