Mimosa Hostilis root bark produces deep purples, rich pinks, and reddish-browns on natural fabrics. The final colour depends on the fibre type, pH, and mordant used

How to Ice Dye with Mimosa Hostilis

1. Prepare the Fabric:

- Use natural fibers like cotton, silk, or wool, as Mimosa hostilis binds best to these.Pre-wash the fabric with a product like Synthrapol to remove oils and impurities for even dyeing.

- Mordant the Fabric:

Mimosa hostilis has natural tannins that act as a mild mordant, but for vibrant, long-lasting colors, pre-treat the fabric with a mordant like alum (potassium aluminum sulfate, 1.75 tsp per pound of fabric) or iron to enhance colorfastness and vary hues. Soak the fabric in the mordant solution for 1 hour, then rinse.

2. Set Up for Ice Dyeing:

- Soak the fabric in a soda ash solution (1 cup per gallon of water) for 15-30 minutes to increase pH, which helps the dye bond. Alternatively, adjust pH with vinegar or other modifiers if desired, as Mimosa hostilis is pH-sensitive.

- Scrunch, fold, or tie the fabric (using tie-dye techniques) and place it in a container or on a rack over a drip tray.

- Cover the fabric with a layer of ice cubes.

3. Apply the Dye:

- Prepare Mimosa Hostilis Dye: Simmer MHRB powder or shredded bark (1:3 ratio of powder to water by weight) in water for 1-2 hours to extract the dye. Strain the liquid to remove solids, or use the powder directly for ice dyeing.

- For ice dyeing, sprinkle MHRB powder directly onto the ice, or drizzle the prepared dye liquid over the ice. The powder is more common in ice dyeing for natural dyes, as it dissolves slowly as the ice melts, creating gradient effects.

- Use multiple colors by combining MHRB with other natural dye powders (e.g., madder root or indigo) for varied patterns.

4. Let the Ice Melt:

- As the ice melts, it slowly carries the dye into the fabric, creating soft, watercolor-like patterns. This can take 6-12 hours, depending on the ice volume and room temperature.

- Cover the container with plastic wrap to retain moisture and enhance dye penetration.

5. Fix and Rinse:

- Let the fabric sit for 12-24 hours to allow the dye to bond fully.

- Rinse thoroughly in cool water until the water runs clear. Use Synthrapol in hot water to remove excess dye and prevent staining.

- Air dry or heat-set the fabric

(e.g., ironing) to improve colorfastness.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS ⤵️

- Color Results:

Mimosa hostilis typically produces reds, purples, browns, or pinks, but results vary based on mordants (alum for reds, iron for darker purples), fabric type, and pH. Ice dyeing may yield softer, less vibrant hues compared to traditional dye baths due to the diluted application.

- Lightfastness:

The dye is fairly resistant to fading but may lose vibrancy with prolonged sunlight exposure. Store dyed items away from direct light or use UV protectants.

- Pattern Effects:

Ice dyeing with MHRB creates subtle, organic patterns rather than the bold, defined designs of synthetic dyes. The high tannin content (10-16%) can lead to deeper, more complex hues but may not split into multiple colors like synthetic dyes.

- Sustainability:

MHRB is eco-friendly, biodegradable, and non-toxic, making it ideal for sustainable dyeing. Use ethically sourced bark to support regenerative harvesting.

- Challenges:

Ice dyeing with natural dyes like MHRB can be less predictable than synthetic dyes. Test on small swatches first, as the dye’s intensity and spread depend on ice melting speed, powder concentration, and fabric absorbency.
